The current design of the American flag, featuring 50 stars on a blue field and 13 stripes representing the original colonies, was adopted on July 4, 1960. The American Flag has been changed 26 times since the first official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. The first flag had 13 stars and 13 stripes representing the 13 colonies that formed the United States. As new states joined the Union, the number of stars and stripes on the flag was changed to reflect the growing number of states. The last change was made in 1960 when Hawaii became the 50th state and one star was added to the flag.
